Living in Sunshine Coast

Getting around

Translink buses cost 50 cents per trip, whatever the distance; the website does not publish an end date for this fare. On the South East Queensland network cash is not accepted: you pay with Visa or Mastercard, a go card or a paper ticket from the station machines. Route 600 links Caloundra and Maroochydore via Kawana and Mooloolaba. Route 620 links Maroochydore and Noosa Heads via Coolum, Peregian and Sunshine Beach. Buses in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland zone are separate: they do not accept the go card and the ticket is paid in cash on board (A$0.50 a trip). The train from Brisbane stops at stations such as Beerwah, Landsborough, Nambour and Cooroy; to reach Noosa you continue by bus from Nambour or Cooroy. Sunshine Coast Airport is in Marcoola, about 15 minutes by car from Maroochydore and 30 from Noosa, and has a public bus, taxis and Uber. The Council counts more than 1,500 km of paths for bikes and scooters.

Areas

Noosa: Noosa Heads and Hastings Street, Noosaville and Tewantin by the river, and Sunshine Beach with more open sea. Coolum and Peregian: beach towns between Noosa and the airport. Maroochydore: bars and music venues on Ocean Street, and the Cotton Tree area by the river. Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland: The Esplanade promenade, more than 1 km of beach and The Wharf, where many boats leave from. Kawana and Caloundra: the southern area, with Kings Beach and the Pumicestone Passage. Hinterland: Eumundi, Nambour, Yandina, Maleny, Montville, Beerwah and the Glass House Mountains. Noosa has had its own council since 2014, separate from Sunshine Coast. Rainbow Beach is further north, on the way to K'gari.

Weather

Humid subtropical, with no dry season. At Sunshine Coast Airport (1996-2025 averages) January, in summer, runs from 21.3°C to 29.1°C and July, in winter, from 9.7°C to 21.1°C. About 1,498 mm of rain falls a year: February is the wettest month, with 217.5 mm, and September the driest, with 52.3 mm. The sea is about 21°C in August and 27°C in February. Humpback whales pass along the coast from June to October.

Work

The Council names aviation, health and wellbeing, cleantech, food and agribusiness, tourism, sport and leisure, professional services, and education and research as high-value industries. With May 2019 data collected by Wikipedia, the sectors that gave the most jobs were health care and social assistance, construction and education. Agriculture accounted for around 1% of jobs, with poultry, strawberries and milk as the main products. Tourism also carries weight in the region. This data describes the local economy: it does not say which jobs are open or promise work.
