Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a beach town next to the easternmost point of Australia, in northern New South Wales. There is a lot of tourism: surf schools, dive trips to Julian Rocks, kayaking, hostels and live music almost daily. It has no airport or long-distance train, so you arrive by road, often from Ballina or Gold Coast.

Living in Byron Bay

Getting around

Byron Bay has no airport or long-distance train. Flights arrive at Ballina Byron Gateway, about 30 minutes away, or at Gold Coast, about 40. From Brisbane the transfer takes 2 to 3 hours. Long-distance buses stop at the Butler Street interchange, which is also where route 640 to Ballina airport leaves from. The published local fares run from A$2.30 to A$5.90 for an adult single; they date from 2021 and the company itself gives them as a guide. The centre and some beaches have paid parking, at A$5 an hour and up to A$25 a day, from 9:00 to 18:00. There are also hire bikes from A$20 for two hours and a 3 km solar train at A$7 each way.

Areas

The centre is organised around Jonson Street, with shops, pubs and music venues. Next to it are Main Beach, Clarkes Beach and The Pass, and further east Wategos and Little Wategos, below the lighthouse. Belongil is towards Brunswick Heads, with The Wreck beach and a recent restaurant area. To the south are Tallow Beach, Suffolk Park and Broken Head. Arts & Industry Estate brings together workshops, galleries and local businesses. Around it are towns such as Bangalow, Mullumbimby, Brunswick Heads and Lennox Head.

Weather

Humid subtropical climate. In January the average maximum is around 28°C and the minimum 21°C; in July, 19°C and 12°C. About 1,500 mm of rain falls a year: February is the wettest month and September the driest. The water is about 25 to 27°C in February and 19 to 22°C in August. Whales pass along the coast from May to November.

Work

The most visible businesses are in tourism, hospitality and leisure: surf and dive schools, boat trips, hostels, pubs, music venues and markets. There is also local production, such as breweries, distilleries and macadamia farms. The council publishes its own vacancies on its website. This list describes what exists in the area, not what jobs are available at any given time.
