Getting around

Translink charges a flat fare of 50 cents per trip on its services, whatever the distance or way of paying. You can tap a contactless card or phone, or use the go card, which is bought in shops, and you must tap on and tap off. CityCat ferries run along the river between UQ St Lucia and Northshore Hamilton. Brisbane Metro has two lines (M1 and M2), and the City Loop and Spring Hill Loop buses are free. Airtrain is not part of the 50 cent fare: it has its own prices, takes about 20 minutes from the airport to the centre, and at its stations the adult go card requires a minimum spend of A$35 (A$25 credit and A$10 deposit). Lime and Neuron shared e-scooters are available for ages 16 and over.

Areas

The City: business centre, with Queen Street Mall, City Botanic Gardens and Queen's Wharf. South Bank: parks, Streets Beach, museums and cultural centre by the river. Fortitude Valley: main nightlife area, with Brunswick Street Mall and Chinatown Mall. New Farm, Newstead and Teneriffe: riverside suburbs, with Brisbane Powerhouse and venues such as The Triffid. West End: Saturday market at Davies Park and bars. Kangaroo Point: cliffs and outdoor activities. Woolloongabba: The Princess Theatre and restaurants. Hamilton: Eat Street Northshore, the end of the CityCat line. The centre, Fortitude Valley and Inner West Brisbane (including Caxton Street) are Safe Night Precincts: venues with a permanent licence to open past midnight must scan ID at the door, unless exempt, and a current passport from any country is accepted.

Weather

Subtropical climate, with an average of about eight hours of sun a day. Typical temperatures according to Visit Brisbane: summer (December to February) 21 to 30 °C; autumn (March to May) 16 to 26 °C; winter (June to August) 10 to 21 °C; spring (September to November) 16 to 26 °C. Queensland does not change its clocks in summer, so there is a time difference with other eastern states during those months.

Work

According to the 2021 Census of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Greater Brisbane had 2,526,238 residents and the industries with the most jobs were hospitals (5.1%), supermarkets (2.4%), primary education (2.4%), takeaway food (2.3%) and social assistance (2.2%). By occupation, professionals (24.7%), clerical and administrative workers (13.5%), managers (12.6%) and technicians and trades workers (12.3%) stood out. There is also retail and events in the centre: Queen Street Mall brings together more than 500 shops and more than 1,000 events a year. These are general employment figures, not vacancies, and do not guarantee work.
