Getting around
Trains, trams and buses are paid with myki. Since July 2026, the adult fare can also be paid with a bank card or phone. The myki card costs A$6 and is not refundable. Public transport in Victoria is half price from 1 June 2026 to 1 January 2027: the adult daily cap drops from A$11.40 to A$5.70. The discount does not include SkyBus or ferries. The daily cap equals two 2-hour fares. Trams are free inside the Free Tram Zone, which covers the CBD and Docklands; if the trip leaves that zone, you must tap on. Trains run from about 4:00 to 1:00 on weekdays and 24 hours at weekends. To leave the city, V/Line goes to regional towns in Victoria.
Areas
**CBD and Southbank:** compact streets, laneways with street art, cafes and the Yarra River. **St Kilda, Elwood and Brighton:** bay beaches, the seafront promenade, Luna Park and Brighton's coloured bathing boxes. **South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor:** shops on Chapel Street and Toorak Road, Prahran Market and the botanic gardens. **Richmond, Collingwood and Abbotsford:** the MCG and Rod Laver Arena, bars and music venues, and Victoria Street, known as Little Saigon. **Carlton, Fitzroy and Brunswick:** Italian restaurants on Lygon Street, shops on Brunswick Street, food from many countries on Sydney Road and music venues.
Weather
Four seasons, with very changeable weather: in the city people talk of "four seasons in one day". Averages in the centre: January, 16 to 27 °C; April, 12 to 21 °C; July, 7.5 to 14.5 °C; October, 11 to 20.5 °C. About 600 mm of rain falls a year. This is data from 1991 to 2015. The peak tourist season runs from November to February.
Work
In the metropolitan centre, the sectors with the most workers in 2024 were professional services (184,088), finance and insurance (102,653) and health care and social assistance (83,258). Retail and hospitality had about 42,000 each, and construction 39,049. In the south-east of the city, the largest sectors are health, retail, construction and manufacturing. These are figures by sector from the Victorian Government, not job vacancies. The conditions of each visa are on the Home Affairs website.
