How many days does it usually take?

  • Driving only: at 5 hours a day, it would be about 6 days in a row. This is our own calculation, with no sightseeing.
  • Sydney to Byron Bay: Visit NSW speaks of four days on the Pacific Highway, stopping along the way.
  • Full route: the Greyhound itinerary lasts two weeks. It includes two nights in Sydney, two in Byron Bay, two on the Gold Coast, K'gari, two days sailing from Airlie Beach and Cairns.
  • The north only: Tourism Australia links a 14-day trip through tropical Queensland, between Cairns and Townsville.

September and October fall in the peak season for all three northern areas and outside the jellyfish season. This is our reading of those dates, not an official statement.

Jellyfish: the swimming question in the north

Surf Life Saving puts the jellyfish season from November to May, although in tropical Queensland they can appear all year. It places the box jellyfish north of Agnes Water and the irukandji north of the southern part of K'gari. That body says to swim only at patrolled beaches.
