There is a train, bus, shuttle, taxi and rideshare (a car with a driver booked through an app, such as Uber). The train reaches Central in about 13 minutes and an adult pays A$21.64 or A$22.94 with an Opal card or contactless payment, depending on the time. A taxi to the centre has a fixed fare of A$60.
This guide covers Kingsford Smith airport (SYD). Everything was seen on 5 November 2026 on the airport's or the operator's website. What does not appear there does not appear here. The city is in the Sydney page.
What are the options and how much do they cost?
There are five, listed in alphabetical order, without ranking them:
| Option | Adult price | Journey time | Times |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus N20 (night) | Opal fare, no figure published | Not published | Midnight to 4:00 |
| DART Express shuttle | Not published on the airport website | Not published | Every day, no times published |
| Taxi | Fixed A$60 to the centre | About 20 minutes | Ranks at each terminal |
| Train | A$21.64 to A$24.20 | About 13 minutes to Central | See below |
| Rideshare | Not published | Not published | Not published |
Why does the train cost so much?
It costs that much because a charge for using the airport stations is added to the fare, A$18.61 for an adult with Opal or contactless payment. Airport Link, the operator of those stations, publishes these prices to the stations in the centre, with data from June 2026:
| Type of payment | Station charge | Train | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opal or contactless, off-peak | A$18.61 | A$3.03 | A$21.64 |
| Opal or contactless, peak | A$18.61 | A$4.33 | A$22.94 |
| Single ticket from a machine | A$19.00 | A$5.20 | A$24.20 |
According to Transport for NSW:
- Caps: the station charge is outside the Opal caps, which are A$19.30 a day from Monday to Thursday, A$9.65 on Fridays, weekends and public holidays, and A$50 a week. The station charge has its own weekly cap of A$37.75.
- Transfer: the 60-minute transfer discount does not apply at the airport stations. Leaving and coming back in generates two trips and two charges.
- Opal card: the stations sell it with a minimum top-up of A$35. The airport adds that it can also be bought at WH Smith.
- Contactless payment: adults can pay with a card or phone without registering. Each passenger uses their own card.
What time does the train run?
On weekdays, the Airport Link timetable starts at 4:22 from the international station and 4:24 from the domestic one. The last train leaves at 23:57 and 23:59, and on Fridays there is one at 00:57 and another at 00:59.
The sources do not fully agree. Transport for NSW mentions trains between 5:00 and midnight. The airport says they run roughly every 10 minutes. In the Airport Link timetable we saw every 15 minutes early on and every 7 or 8 at peak times. That page only shows weekdays.
Where the station is:
- Terminal 1: on the arrivals level, by exit A, to the right and all the way to the end.
- Terminals 2 and 3: by the lift or escalator next to baggage belt 1.
The line is the T8. Airport Link lists these stations in the centre: Central, Museum, St James, Circular Quay, Wynyard and Town Hall.
Is there a direct bus to the centre?
By day, not among the routes Transport for NSW lists. At night, yes:
- 350: from the domestic terminal to Bondi Junction, via Mascot, Maroubra and Coogee. It runs at least every 10 minutes during the day.
- 420: from Burwood to Mascot station, via both terminals. It runs from 4:00 to midnight.
- N20: from Riverwood to the centre, via the international terminal. It runs from midnight to 4:00.
The Transport for NSW planner calculates the fare for each trip.
The DART Express shuttle leaves from Terminal 1 and goes to Central, Hyde Park, Kings Cross, Darling Harbour and The Rocks. The airport says other companies cover more destinations and refers readers to each one for times and prices.
How much does a taxi or rideshare cost?
A taxi to the centre has a fixed fare of A$60, on trial since 3 November 2025. It rises to A$80 in a large taxi, if requested or if five or more people travel. It includes taxes and tolls, but not the card payment surcharge or cleaning costs. Other trips go by meter.
The airport website gives another figure: A$45 to A$55 and about 20 minutes. It has no date, so we do not know which of the two is more recent.
For rideshare, the airport indicates a priority pick-up zone, where you stay with the driver. It does not publish prices.
What have we not been able to confirm?
These details are missing:
- End of the taxi trial. Transport for NSW gives no date.
- Price of DART Express and other shuttles. We have not opened their websites.
- Train at weekends. Airport Link only showed us the weekday timetable.
- Western Sydney International, the second airport. Time Out reported on 7 October 2026 that its passenger flights were starting that month. Its website returned no content to us, so we give no information here.
What comes after the airport?
Next is usually somewhere to sleep and a phone. These guides cover it:
