A hostel is paid for per night and runs on house rules, not on a tenancy contract. In most houses in the YHA network, you check in from 14:00 and check out at 10:00. You must show official photo ID and you cannot stay more than 14 nights. Each hostel has its own conditions, so check them on its website before booking.
We have not found an official figure for how long it takes to find a room, so we do not say here how many nights to book. Study Australia, the Government's website for students, describes hostels and hotels as an option while you look for something longer-term, and asks you to check the total cost, cancellation and maximum stay first.
What if I arrive before check-in time?
This is what YHA says:
- Room: in most of its houses you check in from 14:00.
- Bags: all of them store luggage before check-in and after check-out.
- Reception: usually open from 7:00 to 22:00. YHA Sydney Central and some others are open 24 hours.
- Out of hours: you must tell the house at least 24 hours in advance.
- Check-out: at 10:00 in most.
Base Backpackers, another network, says all its hostels use contactless check-in with the Goki app. Its website lists Nomads houses in Sydney, Melbourne, Noosa, Airlie Beach and Magnetic Island.
What are you asked for on arrival?
- ID: YHA asks for official photo ID, and a photocopy or an image is not valid. It does not name the passport, but it fits that description. It is verified in the app or at reception. If you do not verify, YHA cancels the booking.
- Photo: in a shared dorm, or a private room with shared bathroom, they take a profile photo if you have not verified in the app.
- Key deposit: may be charged on arrival. YHA does not give the figure.
- Way of paying: YHA Sydney Central does not accept cash, only Mastercard or Visa.
- Age: YHA says anyone can stay, whatever their age. Anyone under 18 goes with an adult and in a private room.
How much does a bed cost?
Hostelworld showed these "from" prices for a dorm bed on 5 November 2026. They are in euros because that is how the website served them to us:
| City | Hostels on the page | Prices read | Range | Middle value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 61 | 15 | €20 to €46, plus one isolated case of €5 | €29 |
| Melbourne | 36 | 29 | €13 to €33 | €20 |
It is the minimum for each house, with no specific dates. It is not the rate for your nights, and the €5 one may be a special offer. The YHA Sydney Central page does not show rates without choosing dates.
Extras at YHA: continental breakfast costs A$14 in most of its houses, and towels are hired or brought from home. Your first stay makes you a member at no cost, with a 10% discount on later ones. The card is also sold for A$15 for two years.
What is it like inside?
- Dorms: YHA calls them co-living and they can be female, male or mixed. At Sydney Central they have 4 and 6 beds, for over-18s only.
- Included: bed linen in all rooms and daily cleaning.
- Lockers: there are some in the dorms, and all houses have lockers for valuables.
- Kitchen: at least one shared, equipped kitchen in each house. You can cook or bring in food from outside.
How long can I stay?
- Maximum at YHA: 14 nights per house. Afterwards they may not let you come back for up to 30 days. YHA warns that it is not long-stay accommodation.
- If you already live nearby: YHA does not accommodate people whose home is in the same municipality as the house. It adds that policies vary, so ask beforehand if you already have an address in that city.
Can I cancel?
According to YHA's terms:
- Flexible rate: free cancellation until 14:00 on the day of arrival, when the stay is charged.
- Non-refundable rate: charged when you book and not refunded or transferred. Special offers also usually are, as are Vivid and New Year's Eve in Sydney.
- Bookings through another website, such as Booking.com: cancelled on that website.
- If you do not show up: they may cancel the booking, sell the bed and charge you a penalty.
- Refunds: take 7 to 10 business days and go back to the original card.
Do I have a tenant's rights?
There is no single answer, because it depends on the state and the agreement. In the Northern Territory, the Darwin legal centre lists hostels among the places where people live as a boarder or lodger, and reminds readers that your rights depend on whether you are a tenant or a boarder.
If the accommodation comes with the job, be careful: in Queensland, the rental authority warns that it has different bond rules and refers readers to check them.
When you move to a room, what you sign does change your rights:
The city pages, such as Brisbane or Cairns, include places to sleep. The visa conditions are in how the visa works.
